Welcome to Cirencester Golf Club Seniors Section we welcome gentlemen over the age of 55, there are roll-ups on a Monday and Wednesday morning excluding days which are Bank Holidays or have internal Senior Competitions planned. A draw for partners takes place at 08:10 in the summer and 08:25 in the winter, but most Seniors arrive earlier for a relaxed chat and a coffee.
Once a month we have official Stableford or Medal competitions with the starting list being posted on the Seniors notice board about a month in advance. In addition to this we have a number of fun social competitions run throughout the year again with starting lists being posted on the Senior notice board about a month in advance.
From March through to September we have 38 matches against other clubs as well as internal matches against Club Captain, Club President, Ladies and Juniors most of which involve dinner afterwards. Selection for these teams is by putting your name down on the match lists which are posted on the Senior match board a month or so prior to the match.
Senior members are very sociable and some have had very interesting lives, jobs etc. We celebrate members birthdays at 80 and 90 with a cut down version of "This is Your Life" and the variety of backgrounds, careers and life experiences can be quite enthralling.
We have a lunch with wives/partners in November, a Three Club Competition followed by Christmas Lunch in December and a men only Annual Dinner in March.
Seniors Captain 2017.
Tuesday 11th April
Being the first team led by Seniors Vice Captain Keith Hodgson for 2017, he thought that he could generate that “winning spirit” on this away match at Bowood.
The squad had some strong players including our +2 player Mark Shipley so high hopes were all around.
The weather was kind to us but a cold wind was blowing. The course was in good condition but the greens were extremely fast and very difficult to use.
Unfortunately, Cirencester was well and truly beaten 4 ½ to 1 ½ however we did have a couple of good results with Paul Simmonds and Mark Woodhead winning their match and David Soar and Mark Shipley halving theirs. The rest, well shall we just say ,we were beaten!
Two home Seniors matches were played in the last week against Wrag Barn GC from Highworth and Cotswold Hills GC near Cheltenham. The Wrag Barn match was lost 5 & 3 with the only Cirencester wins coming from Mike Helyer & Mike Brown and Neil Grant & Adrian Ruskell. The match against Cotswold Hills was halved 4 & 4 with Andy Ponting & Graham Morgan winning their match 6 & 5 and John Hall & Andrew Tunnicliffe scoring a 3 & 2 victory.
On Monday the past and present Seniors Committee members played the annual Maurice Cooper Putter Match which was strongly contested and won with an outstanding score of 44 Stableford points by Paul Horrell followed by Ken Anderson with 39 points and a number of equal third places each with 37 points.
The largest field ever in a Seniors Competition played for the Hansford Cup on Monday 3rd April. In total there were 98 cards submitted with some excellent scores on a very sunny day which was excellent for golf. Division One & overall winner was Roy Lipscombe who scored 42 Stableford points and earned a handicap reduction of 1.5, the other top placed entrants in Division One were Emrys Williams and Robert Evans on 37 points (placing determined on countback) and Mick Moore & Andrew Ponting each with 35 points. Division Two was headed up by Jeremy Briggs with an excellent 40 points, earning him a handicap reduction of 1.2, followed by Jeffrey Salter on 39 points and Robert Bell, Ken Anderson and Francis Sheppard all with 38 points, again with the placings being determined on countback.
